Some simple tips for landscape lighting installations
Although landscape lighting systems require some planning and design there are some simple tips that all installers should remember before moving forward with their landscape lighting project.
Don't Forget that Light Attracts Bugs
Most everyone knows and has witnessed bugs being drawn to outdoor lighting in the summer time. There is not much that can be done to prevent this so it is important to consider the behavior of these summer time pests when planning your landscape lighting installation. Since the insects will be attracted to the light it is important to locate the fixtures and focus of the light away from areas where people will be gathered. This can be accomplished by locating the fixture away from patio, deck or other area to be occupied and by directing the main focus of the light away from this area. Most high powered LED landscape fixtures can provide enough indirect light to illuminate the area without attracting unwanted insects.
Presentation of Fixtures
In many landscape lighting applications and designs, the light produced by the fixture should be the focus of the design not the fixture itself. Although there are many very attractive decorative landscape lighting fixtures on the market today, in most cases, it is the effect of the light that adds the greatest impact to your landscape. Consider this when installing your landscape lighting system. You may want to conceal the actual fixture in a tree or bush. In other cases, such as path lighting this may not be possible. Make sure that you determine which landscape fixtures will be visible and which will be hidden in making your purchasing decisions. Typically, landscape fixtures with decorative designs and finishes are more expenses. Often the same light is offered in standard designs or finishes and offers the same light output and overall performance. There is no sense in spending the extra money for a fancy finish if the fixture is going to be concealed.
Don't Over Do it
Try to find a good balance with the amount of fixtures you install and the overall light output that is created. Most people are not trying to make their landscape look like a prison yard at night. Adding too much light can make a very attractive home look like a industrial park. Its always better to start simple and experience the effect of the lights you install. It is not difficult to add more light later.
